Patients with gastrointestinal, liver, biliary and pancreatic disorders may present in a varied manner. Complaints vary depending on the part of gastrointestinal tract involved and the nature of disease. Common complaints of GI disorders are abdominal pain, abdominal lump, black stools, frank bleeding in stools, vomiting, difficulty in swallowing, constipation, loose motions, bloating, jaundice, unexplained weight loss, loss of appetite, weakness, and fever etcetera. Sometimes problems are diagnosed incidentally when being investigated for other health problems like anemia, fever or during a routine health check up. They are more common in elderly. Disease like cancer has silent progression before presentation. Some problems like intestinal obstruction, bowel perforation, bowel gangrene, appendicitis, colonic diverticulitis, acute cholecystitis, acute pancreatitis present as an emergency / acute event. If you or your physician suspects / diagnoses a GI, liver, biliary or pancreatic problem, it should be given urgent attention & you should visit a specialist.
